Mattress Care – Keeping it Healthy With a Protector

Mattress Care – Prolong the life of your mattress by keeping it healthy and learn how to protect it against dust mites.

The fact is we spend an average 120 days in bed each year!
Some of us much more than others! Ask any mother trying to prize their teenager out of the bed in the mornings!
We are all guilty of throwing the quilt back over the bed when we make them in the mornings, not airing them sufficiently or allowing moisture to dispel completely.
I also have two fluffy cats that will happily sleep on my bed as soon as they have been fed and I have left for work.
I know exactly where they go! They will be straight to our comfy bed in the warm spot!
So if I leave the quilt rolled back they will deposit fluff on the very bed covers I will be sleeping on that night! I love them dearly!

It is important to keep your mattress healthy and hygienic.

Another fact is we lose up to a pint of fluid every night, over half can be absorbed by our beds when we sleep.
Add in the warmth that is generated by our bodies and the thousands of skin cells we shed, and you have a perfect breeding ground for bacteria! Ewww!

The most effective way of keeping your mattress healthy and clean is by using a mattress protector.
Here at Better Furniture we offer Guardsman’s anti-allergy mattress protectors, these are designed to prevent moisture from being absorbed into your mattress, preventing dust mites and improving cleanliness also ultimately the life span of your mattress, leaving you to rest perfectly on your new bed.

There are a few other things you can do to help you have a healthy mattress:

– Let your mattress air regularly; a great time is when changing your bedding.
just leave your mattress to air for an hour before putting the new sheets on.
– Vacuum the surface of your mattress to remove any accumulation of dirt & debris.
– Keep away from damp & moisture; remember if you spill something on your mattress make sure you extract as much of the spill as you can – mattresses don’t dry out very easily.

Here comes the squeemish bit!……

What is a Dust Mite?

Mattress dust mite

Dust mites are members of the arachnid family (related to ticks and spiders).
They are tiny and not visible to the human eye.
They thrive in large numbers and feed on flakes of human skin, surviving well when conditions are warm and humid. The life of an adult dust mite is between 30 to 90 days, with females producing 1 to 3 eggs per day in this period.

Despite their size, dust mites produce 10-20 waste particles per day, each containing a protein known to cause allergic reactions and asthma.
These proteins are light and thin, when disturbed they float and disperse into the air.
Research has shown that as much as 30% of the population are allergic to dust mite waste.
Dust mites can live anywhere, including five star hotels and even in the poshest homes! — in fact; their presence is not determined by housekeeping standards.

How do I know if I have dust mites in my home?

As dust mites are invisible to the human eye, determining if you have dust mites in your home is difficult.
There is however one tell-tale sign of dust mite presence.
If any of your family are having allergic reactions in your home there is a good chance you have dust mites.
